Talking With Your Doctor
Take an active role in your health care. Make your doctor appointment a two-way conversation. Your doctor is an expert on medical care, but you are the expert on YOU. By partnering with your doctor and building a good relationship, you can work together in determining the best treatment and medications for any illness or medical conditions you have. And don't forget to ask about preventive screenings!
Here are some tips to follow during your next appointment with your doctor or other health professional.
- Listen carefully to what your health professional says. Make sure you understand what you are told about any diagnosis or treatment. Print and bring a copy of the Provider Communications ChecklistOpens a PDF with you to help keep track of important health related conversations.
- Ask questions. If you don't understand something your health professional says, ask for it to be repeated in a different way.
- Be honest. If your values, beliefs, fears, or concerns may interfere with a treatment that is suggested, talk with your health professional about it. Other treatment options may be available.
Remember to keep things on track and get the most out of your appointment. Write down your goals and questions for the visit. To find out more information about Health Screenings and Tips on "Talking to YOUR Doctor" follow this link to view the: Ask the Doctor Checklist.
